The local drugstore used to be the center of the town. They tended to be more than just pharmacies; they sold limited general merchandise, and the really good ones had soda fountains. The fun fountains served up shakes and malts, phosphates, ice cream sundaes, and all kinds of other treats that were beloved by kids and adults alike.
The little town of Springfield, in Sarpy County, has one of the state's only remaining combined drugstore and soda fountains.
Springfield Drug doesn't date all the way back to the heyday of the soda fountain (which most of think of as the '50s and '60s), but it has faithfully held onto the retro feel of the small-town drugstore.
In the 1980s, the owner expanded the drugstore by adding on an old-fashion soda fountain. The building it's in was once a bank, and you can still see the vault today.

This Simpsons bench is perhaps the most noticeable part of the building's interior.
Sit down and take a few selfies with the Simpsons so you can say that you visited them in Springfield (no one has to know it wasn't the "real" Springfield!).
Little items like greeting cards, toys, candy, and household items are for sale. Your purchases will be rung up on a beautiful, noisy, antique cash register.
The pharmacy is a real, working pharmacy filling prescriptions and dispensing advice on over-the-counter remedies.
But there are also antiques scattered throughout the entire store. Some of them are throwbacks to the history of the pharmacy trade. Others are simply cool old machines that call to mind the golden age of the neighborhood drug store.
By far, the focal point of Springfield Drug is the soda counter.
You can sit down and have some of the best ice cream of your life. Reviewers rave about the milkshakes and banana splits, but any treat you get here will be sure to delight you. And from the moment you step into the store, you'll be treated like family by some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet.
You can find Springfield Drug at 205 Main St, Springfield, NE 68059. Take a look at their website here.
The traditional drugstore with the soda fountain inside is increasingly a rarity these days. There are only a few smattered throughout the state. This one in Arapahoe is well-loved by residents and visitors alike.
