Plenty of places claim to have the best pizza in Nebraska, and we have to admit that there are some very strong contenders across the state. But if you’re craving the freshest, thickest, most satisfying pizza ever, you’ll want to head to Dannebrog. The Danish Bakery is something of a hidden gem, but once you discover its incredible savory pies, it’s sure to become your go-to pizza place.
The Danish Bakery, located in the tiny town of Dannebrog in Howard County, has reached legendary status among locals and visitors alike.
It's not because of the cozy interior or the always-friendly folks behind the counter - although those certainly contribute to the bakery's stellar reputation.
These culinary marvels come in three sizes: small (9 inches), medium (12 inches), and large (14 inches). Even though the small only has four pieces, it may be actually enough to feed a family of four.
How can that be? Well, it's all about the bulk. The fresh-baked crust itself is thick, chewy, and nothing short of heavenly. Even if you opt for a plain cheese pizza, you'll be surprised at how thick the slices are.
But you'd really be missing out if you stuck with the plain cheese pizza. The menu features some wildly inventive topping combinations along with your more standard flavors.
Some customer favorites are the cheeseburger and taco pizzas (both Nebraska staples), but if you really want to experience the magic of the Danish Bakery, try the sauerkraut pizza. It comes with a hefty layer of sausage, mushrooms and onions, and a heap of sauerkraut.
There's even a breakfast pizza and a dessert pizza!
The catch is that The Danish Bakery only offers pizza on Thursday evenings. If you want to make sure you get your own pizza pie, call ahead to order - and don't count on finding an empty seat on pizza night!
The rest of the week, you can stop in for a breakfast sandwich, some yummy pastries, or an incredible lunch. The lunch special changes daily, but you can count on it involving fresh, delicious comfort food every single day.
If you're a fan of the classic Nebraska combination of thick chili and a gooey cinnamon roll, clear your calendar and get yourself to Dannebrog. You don't want to miss this unbeatable treat.
No matter when you visit, as soon as you walk in you'll be instantly captivated by the smell of freshly baked bread, cakes, pies, cookies, and more.
The kolaches are especially decadent. Grab a few to share...or do what we do and just keep them all to yourself.
If you don't have time to linger, there are plenty of grab-and-go treats available. From fresh loaves of bread to cookies to the bakery's famous scotcharoos, there's sure to be something here that you just need to have.
The bakery opens at 7 a.m. every weekday and 8 a.m. on Saturday, so there's plenty of time to stop in and grab a cinnamon or pecan roll, a kolache, a slice of cake, or whatever else will get you through the morning.
Is your tummy growling yet? Because we can’t stop thinking about those pizzas…or those desserts. Call ahead for your pizza on Thursday evenings between 4:30 and 9 p.m., or stop by any day of the week for tons of other mouthwatering goodies. Visit The Danish Bakery’s Facebook page for daily specials and much more.
There’s another legendary bakery in Nebraska that you just have to visit – it’s even won a prestigious James Beard award for its excellent offerings and homemade bierocks. Check out Sehnert’s Bakery in McCook.
