There’s not a whole lot to say about sandwiches except “yum.” There are endless options for creating the absolute perfect sandwich, and some places have really mastered the balance of ingredients. These 10 aren’t the only sandwiches you need to try in Nebraska, but they’re a good start for your sandwich adventure.
The sandwiches listed here are in no particular order.
1. Pork tenderloin, The Cabin Bar and Grill, Omaha
The hallmark of a great tenderloin is a patty so big it completely hides the bun. The crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside tenderloin patties at The Cabin are at least 2-3 times the size of the buns, and you'll have to have quite the appetite to finish one in one sitting. 9226 Mormon Bridge Rd, Omaha, NE 68152
2. Hamburger, Goonie's Sports Bar and Grill, Gering
Yes, "hamburger" is pretty vague since there are 17 varieties on the menu at Goonie's. But for the best burger in the state (officially - they have the trophy to prove it), you need to leave your options open. You'll probably want to plan 17 trips to try them all. 310 M St, Gering, NE 69341
3. Meatball sub, Citta' Deli, McCook
It's hard to choose just one sandwich to highlight from Citta' because these guys know their way around a sandwich. But the meatball sub has captured our hearts with the perfect sauce to cheese to bread ratio, and every bite is better than the last. 110 W 3rd St, McCook, NE 69001
4. French Dip, The Cellar Bar & Grill, Kearney
With thin-sliced prime rib stacked a mile high in a tasty toasty bun and a side of perfectly flavored au jus for dipping, this French dip is unforgettable. 3901 2nd Ave, Kearney, NE 68847
5. Grilled cheese, Accelerando Coffee House, Omaha
This simple but perfectly balanced grilled cheese was judged to be the best in Nebraska, and we can't say we argue with that. It comes with a little side of tomato soup - just enough for dipping. We actually devoted an entire article to singing this sandwich's praises.

6. Cheese frenchy (or frenchie, or frenchee), The Mixing Bowl Cafe, Gering
This delightful sandwich got its start in Nebraska at Kings Food Host, and a few restaurants have picked up the torch since they closed. It's essentially a breaded and fried grilled cheese, and it's absolute heaven. The Mixing Bowl uses the freshest ingredients and puts a sophisticated spin on an otherwise kind of unsophisticated sandwich. 1945 10th St, Gering, NE 69341
7. Hot roast beef sandwich, Cast Iron Bar and Grille, Stuart
It's not a hot roast beef sandwich unless it's totally saturated in gravy and accompanied by fluffy mashed potatoes. This is a fork-and-knife kind of sandwich, which is a good thing. It slows you down a little so you don't inhale the whole thing inside of a minute. 806 US-20, Stuart, NE 68780
8. Carp Sandwich, Joe Tess' Place, Omaha
Joe Tess is famous for its classic fried carp, which you can get in sandwich or dinner form. Either way you'll get greasy, crispy perfection served with rye bread and pickle slices. You have to pick the bones out yourself, which would ordinarily be too much work...but this fish is absolutely worth it. 5424 S 24th St, Omaha, NE 68107
9. Reuben, Crescent Moon Ale House, Omaha
The reuben at Crescent Moon has repeatedly been named the best in Nebraska, and the throngs of people who travel to try it will probably agree. You can't go wrong with the classic, but when ReubenFest rolls around, you can try the flavor combination in lots of different novel forms. 3578 Farnam St, Omaha, NE 68131
Honorable mention reuben: Irv's Deli, Fremont
We were pretty sure there would be a riot if we didn't mention Irv's famous giant reuben. They make their own dressing, and the huge slices of rye bread could be a meal on their own. 345 N Main St, Fremont, NE 68025
10. Runza
We don't even care that it's from a chain restaurant - this is a Nebraska classic and you have to try it before you die. The classic beef and cabbage baked inside a little loaf of bread is unstoppable.
