With so many remote rural areas in Nebraska, it’s not hard to find a restaurant that you could think of as being “in the middle of nowhere.” (The Nebrask-Inn in Gross and the Monowi Tavern come to mind.) But for a truly remote restaurant, there are few more impressive than the Loma Tavern. Technically it’s a bar that serves food rather than a restaurant, but the food and the atmosphere are what will keep you coming back.
If you weren't looking for it, you might not ever find Loma.
This tiny unincorporated community of around 50 people quietly sits in in Butler County, encircled by a few other tiny towns and villages. If you ride the Oak Creek Trail between Valparaiso and Brainard you'll be familiar with this little lost piece of vintage Nebraska.
There's a single dirt road here and only a few buildings.
Located in a tiny, dusty-looking building, the tavern is a place that you might pass on by...if it weren't the only business in town. There's a hitching post out front, making you wonder for a moment if you've stepped back in time.
There's a welcoming atmosphere here, and an air of fun that you can't miss. You'll hear crunching with every step as you walk across the peanut shells discarded there by other patrons.
The little tavern is there to give people from Loma and surrounding communities a place to gather and have a great time. It's a special place that embodies everything small-town Nebraska should: friendliness, fun, and a welcoming atmosphere.
When you leave Loma, it’s like stepping back into the real world. This little tavern – and maybe the whole town – is a refuge from the fast-paced modern world. Take a trip out to Loma when you have a free evening – it’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else.
