With the proliferation of chain coffee places, locally-owned coffee shops are a little harder to come by than they used to be. This one in small-town Nebraska is a community treasure that keeps visitors caffeinated and fed in a wonderfully homey environment.
When you find yourself in the little town of West Point, Nebraska, look for the distinctive red door on the side of this little building on Lincoln Street. The name of the shop (and the color of the door) comes from the practice of painting house doors red to communicate that travelers are welcome.
The sentiment is supported by the welcoming, laid-back environment inside. There are lots of cozy places to sit and enjoy a drink or a meal, and if you're not sure what you want, the helpful staff will be happy to explain your options.
Of course, you can always customize your drink with flavored syrups to make your own unique kind of drink. (But again, the baristas will be happy to help you pick a tasty combination!)
Come by in the morning for some delicious breakfast. The pastries are freshly baked and loaded with fresh fruit and other yummy additions. Or opt for a heartier breakfast, including baked oatmeal, breakfast bowls, breakfast burritos, and yogurt parfaits.
