When it comes to all-American food, a big juicy burger might be the most American meal of all. And no Nebraska burger joint is more American than Honest Abe’s Burgers and Freedom, with two locations in the capital city.
Find Honest Abe's at the original location in the Meadowlane Shopping Center at 840 N 70th Street, or stop by the newer downtown location at 126 N 14th St (both in Lincoln, of course).
Don't get so busy looking at all of the fun decor that you forget about the food, though. That's why you're here, right? There are several burgers that you'll find on the menu every single day...
...And then there are the rotating burgers that change regularly, and a special burger of the week. Each location has its own specials, so be sure to check with the appropriate location before heading out for lunch with a specific burger in mind.
Special dietary needs are no problem for Honest Abe. You can always substitute a vegan patty or portabella mushroom cap for the beef patty, or swap a gluten-free bun for the standard bun. If you're low carbing it, ditch the bun altogether and opt for your patty and all the fixin's on a bed of spinach or romaine lettuce.
Every burger is carefully handcrafted with some of the most inventive and surprising toppings imaginable. This weekly special from the past was the Reef and Beef, made of a 6 oz beef patty, shrimp salad, Old Bay mayo, shredded cabbage, and cocktail sauce. Abe himself couldn't have dreamed up a more delicious creation.
This former special, the Prickly Pear, consisted of a 6 oz patty, pickled cactus, chipotle black bean purée, green chili, guacamole, bacon, and queso fresco. This thing is not messing around - it's all about making your tastebuds sing with delight.
To be honest (see what I did there?), it's hard to imagine how you could fit your mouth around some of these loaded burgers. This big fella is a good old fashioned cheeseburger - nothing but the basics and Honest Abe's special cheeseburger sauce.
Even the side dishes are something to write home about. The Freedom Fries are potato perfection - and if you want to kick it up a little, order the parmesan truffle fries.
...But both locations offer soda and delicious all-ages milkshakes. This one is the Birthday Cake. You can't possibly have a bad day when you're drinking a creamy shake with sprinkles on top!
