They say that anything worth having is worth working for, and this western Nebraska hike proves that. It will lead you to some of the state’s most spectacular views over the course of a 6.2-mile, moderate-difficulty trail. Set aside a good block of time to complete this trail – the average hiker will finish it in just over three hours. Lace up your hiking boots and let’s set out on this one-of-a-kind trail.
Smiley Canyon and Johnson Trail Loop is located just west of Fort Robinson, near Crawford. This is the part of the state where you'll see rocky buttes alongside rolling hills.
If you're exploring Fort Robinson, Smiley Canyon is an outstanding side trip. If you'd rather not do the entire hike, there's a scenic overlook a little further west on Highway 20. However, we highly recommend you get out to experience this enchanting landscape up close.
From the ridge of the canyon, you can see for miles and miles. The unspoiled wilderness is truly breathtaking, and it's unlike any other place in the state.
Along the trail, you'll gain 807 feet of elevation. The ground can be uneven and rocky, making it challenging - but far from impossible! - for less-experienced hikers.
Be sure to bring along plenty of water and sunscreen as there is no shade on this wide-open trail. Pack snacks, too - 6 miles is a long way to walk, and you'll need your energy.
The views are some of the most magnificent you'll ever see in the Cornhusker State. Be sure to take a few moments to stop, take in the sights, and snap a few pictures - although we think you'll find that photos can't truly capture the beauty of this place.
While you're in the area, keep an eye out for the bison herd that roams the canyon. The sight of these majestic animals with the rocky western Nebraska landscape in the background is something you'll never forget.
Whether you decide to embark on this ambitious hike or just enjoy the incredible view from the highway (pictured below), a visit to Smiley Canyon is sure to become a treasured memory of your time in western Nebraska.
To get to the Smiley Canyon Loop Trail, head west from Fort Robinson on Smiley Canyon Scenic Drive. You’ll eventually come to a junction where you can either continue straight or turn left to take the Smiley Canyon Scenic Drive loop. Turn left and drive a short distance until you see the trailhead. Find a trail map and other info about the hike on its AllTrails page. There are other trails in the area, too, and they’re all worth exploring!
