Social distancing guidelines have been keeping us safe during the coronavirus pandemic by keeping us apart. This Omaha restaurant is working within those rules to bring customers together again over great food, great drinks, and great movies. It’s Taco Tuesday meets the date-night drive-in!
The Corner Kick Street Tacos & Tequila Cantina is located in Millard, West Omaha.
In more normal times, the stylish sports barl/restaurant is filled with tons of happy patrons and the sounds of lively conversations. Lately, thanks to the novel coronavirus pandemic, things have understandably been much quieter.
Like other Omaha restaurants, the Corner Kick's dining room was closed through the end of April. The restaurant's owners found a unique way to pivot its focus and keep customers coming in. The plan, ironically enough, centered on its mostly-empty parking lot.
Owner Paul McRae brought in some projectors and set up a makeshift drive-in theater in the parking lot in front of the Corner Kick. The weekly movie night has proven very popular in its first several weeks.
Every Thursday, the restaurant's Facebook page offers up a choice between two movies and asks customers to choose the next feature. Former winners have included The Goonies, Smokey and the Bandit, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
The following Wednesday, cars gather in the parking lot, full of people who are eager to enjoy a delicious meal and a fun movie from the comfort of their cars.
People simply sit in their cars and tune in to the movie's audio through their radios. Some lucky longtime customers turned up for a movie night recently to be greeted with a decorated parking stall when they made this their anniversary dinner destination!
If you want to order food to enjoy with the movie, simply call ahead and place your order. Runners from Corner Kick and the nearby Indian restaurant Kinaara bring food and drinks out to patrons' cars.
This fun experiment has been a huge benefit not only for the restaurant, but for patrons who were getting bored of spending every night at home. While life won't be back to normal for quite a while, it's great to know that we can still enjoy simple pleasures like a tasty meal, a great movie, and the company of that special someone.
Check out the Corner Kick Street Tacos & Tequila Cantina’s Facebook page for information about upcoming drive-in movie nights. Be sure to chime in to vote for next week’s feature, too.
If you’re feeling the strain of being stuck at home, don’t worry – Nebraska’s most amazing places will still be waiting for you no matter how long you’re away.
