This Old-World German Bakery In Nebraska Has Been Around Since 1976

In a world that changes faster than we can keep up, it’s good to know that we can count on a few favorite places to be there when we need them. This delightful German bakery has been serving European favorites for more than 40 years, and it’s become a staple of Nebraska life.

Gerda's German Bakery is located in a quaint little building in Omaha. German immigrant Gerda Bailey opened the business to share her delicious pastries and other treats with the world.

Stepping inside is a lot like visiting family. Regulars populate the cozy interior, enjoying sugary, freshly-baked doughnuts and sipping on mugs of coffee.

The amazing smells that greet you at the door are absolutely intoxicating. The pastry case will set your mouth watering uncontrollably. The kolaches are some of the best you'll ever taste.

Gerda's is a favorite place to pick up holiday treats. Cookies and pastries galore make for the most beautiful (and tastiest!) Christmas platters when family is visiting.

This writer's family always had Gerda's Christmas Stollen on the table at Christmas. The fresh bread and sweet little pockets of fruit are the stuff of dreams.

Stop by around Easter for some made-from-scratch hot cross buns that will make your belly happier than it's ever been.

But Gerda's isn't just about the baked goods. You can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner in this old-world eatery. The most popular dish here is Gerda's Jaeger Schnitzel, which is well worth the trip to get here.

This sweet little hometown restaurant may specialize in German cuisine, but you can also find less German dishes here, like corned beef and cabbage around St. Patrick's Day.

Gerda's is one of those wonderful little spots that is sure to become a favorite as soon as you discover it. Sadly, Gerda passed away in 2018, but her legacy lives on in this classic bakery and restaurant that we hope will be around for decades to come.
