The drive-in restaurant was once a staple of life in just about every town. While there aren’t nearly as many of them as there were way back when, there’s one classic drive-in joint that’s still wowing visitors 70 years after it opened.
Tastee Treet opened in Norfolk in 1949. It began life as Brogren’s Dairy Treet; it took on the Tastee Treet moniker when owner Louis Brogren purchased the Tastee Treet franchise rights in 1950.
The restaurant stayed in the family for decades and became a mainstay of Norfolk dining. Whenever folks pass through town or come home to visit, the Tastee Treet is a compulsory stop.
The classic drive-in is well loved for its ice cream treats, but its real claim to fame is the delicious loose meat sandwiches known as the tastee beef or tastee cheese. Picture a hamburger, but less structured. Whether you get it plain, with pickles and mustard, or with your own special combination of toppings and condiments, it's bound to be a work of art.
Other menu favorites include tastee fries, soft-serve ice cream, floats, and slushes. The menu hasn't changed much at all since the location first opened, which is a conscious choice. In 2018, the business was purchased by owners outside of the Brogren family for the very first time. Their mission is to keep things the way they've always been, with the exception of a few minor upgrades.
One of the changes returning customers will notice - aside from the charming new paint job - is that Tastee Treet now accepts credit/debit cards. Now you can satisfy your Tastee Treet cravings without worrying about stopping at the ATM on the way!
Address: 300 S 1st Street, Norfolk, NE 68701. For more information, including specials, visit Tastee Treet’s Facebook page.
