For a state with so much railroad history, Nebraska has a stark shortage of passenger trains these days. But one novelty train is bringing joy and Christmas magic into the lives of kids and their grownups. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo operates a North Pole Express train that offers up a direct route to Santa.

In December, the Lincoln Children's Zoo's train is turned into the North Pole Express - Lincoln's only train with direct service to Santa's village.

After boarding the classic zoo train, you'll be whisked off to Candy Cane Lane, where you'll disembark to write a letter to Santa. Then you'll stay on Candy Cane Lane for a special meet and greet with the man of the hour himself: Santa!

Parents, when your sweeties meet Santa, you can purchase a photo package from the zoo or take your own photos.

The North Pole Express runs on weekends from December 7 through December 23. The cost is $7.95 for zoo members and $10.95 for non-members; all passengers ages 2 and up need a ticket to ride. Check out the zoo’s site or Facebook page for more information, including ticket availability.

There is another scenic railroad ride in Nebraska that you might love…but you’d have to be really tiny to ride this train.
