There’s nothing better on a blistering hot summer day than jumping into the water. Besides being the best way to cool off, swimming is also great exercise and a fun thing for families to do together. But the community pool gets crowded quickly, and the chlorine isn’t for everyone. Lakes and swimming holes offer a more natural alternative for cool summer fun.
Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area is a small park located just west of Humboldt in Richardson County. It's not one of the most popular recreation areas in the state, so it's almost never crowded.
It's a relaxing place where folks go to enjoy a day outdoors and soak up the sun. The water is clear and cool, and the sandy beach is perfect for playing.
Kirkman's Cove doesn't feel quite as built-up as many of Nebraska's other recreation areas, so although this is a human-made lake, it really does feel like you've discovered a natural swimming hole that's perfect for a summer day.
Swimming isn't the only activity at this little park. Fishing, walking, and boating are also popular, and you can camp in a tent or RV for a small fee. Self-service registration is available on site for campers.
Picnic areas, grills, and a playground are all available. There are also water and restrooms on site, so it's easy to extend your swimming trip at Kirkman's Cove to an entire day filled with all kinds of fun.
Just outside of the recreation area is Kirkman's Lakeview Golf Course, a picturesque nine-hole public course. Take the whole family, or just drop Dad off to golf while everyone else goes swimming.
This little-known recreation area is a real hidden gem in southeastern Nebraska. You'll love how secluded and peaceful it feels, even when you aren't the only people there.
This short video gives an overview of Kirkman’s Cove and what you can expect from your visit there.
