As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Have you ever wanted to get away from everything? Maybe even enjoy a carefree, waterfront vacation or staycation? We feel like that too sometimes! There’s a wonderful place to do that in Nebraska, and it’s so remote that you may find yourself wanting to stay even longer to enjoy the quiet and relaxation! Nebraska cabin rentals are few and far between, if we’re being honest, but this season you should consider enjoying a stay in one of the Merritt Reservoir cabins at the Merritt Reservoir Trading Post Resort. Here, you’ll find yourself able to kick back, relax, and enjoy nature, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind you.
Merritt Trading Post Resort probably doesn't fit most people's definition of "resort." There are no spa treatments or world-class restaurants here - just you, nature, and your fellow visitors.
The closest major city is Valentine, which is a 30-minute drive away. The nights here are darker than just about anywhere else in the state, allowing for some absolutely stunning stargazing.
Choose between cabins with four double beds, three double beds, two double beds, or one queen-size bed. Linens are provided, and the housekeeping service will bring you fresh towels every day.
You'll enjoy the basic comforts of home, including a private bathroom with a shower, fridge with freezer, heat and air conditioning, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, and more. There are even dishes, cups, and silverware along with a limited amount of kitchen cookware so you can prepare your own meals.
True to its name, Merritt Trading Post has a store where you can get some necessities for your trip. Groceries, bait, gasoline, personal care items, camping supplies, and even hunting and fishing licenses are available for purchase.
And you'll certainly want to make sure you've got those licenses because Merritt Reservoir is one of Nebraska's top fishing spots. The lake is stocked with walleye, muskie, bluegill, largemouth bass, catfish, perch, and more.
If you're a novice angler (or if you just want a little guidance), the resort offers guided tours that will show you where and how to snag your next record-setting catch, no matter the season.
But you don't have to limit yourself to fishing and hunting when you visit Merritt Trading Post Resort. The lake is gorgeous and lends itself well to boaters, swimmers, and anyone who enjoys a beautiful sandy beach.
You can learn more about Merritt Trading cabins on the Merritt Trading Post Resort website, or by giving them a follow on Facebook. Since this is such a remote area, you’ll want to be careful to pack everything you’ll need as there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to find it in the trading post! Rates and availability vary by season, so get in touch with management to find the perfect time for your visit.
While a quiet, waterfront stay in one of these cabin rentals in Nebraska is absolutely worth it, take your getaway to the next level by packing along a telescope or camera to admire the stars! Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area is one of the state’s best dark sky areas, and there’s a lot of beauty to be enjoyed here even after the sun goes down.
