Once upon a time, Main Street was the place to gather in every town. It was where all of the businesses were and where friends congregated to catch up on all the latest news. As towns and cities began to spread out, the centers of commerce became larger and Main Street stopped being the central focus of towns. Some towns have restored their main streets to their glory days as part of the Nebraska Main Street program. The Main Street program encourages communities to beautify their downtown areas, restore old buildings, and recreate the gathering places that were once the centers of activity. These seven towns (in alphabetical order) have been accredited by Nebraska Main Street.
The City of Beatrice is working with businesses to revitalize their storefronts, including improving signs, awnings, and window displays. As the site of the first claim under the Homestead Act of 1862, Beatrice has so much history to share with residents and visitors. The town's beautified downtown area reflects their desire to honor the past.
Falls City has been a Heritage Nebraska Main Street Community since 2010. Their projects involve inviting new businesses to join the main street community and fostering civic pride through improvements.
Fremont's main street area was once a shining representation of Nebraska's tough but fun-loving residents. Although it isn't as crowded or grand as it once was, Main Street Fremont is working hard to attract new businesses and improve the facades of existing businesses. Their efforts have been paying off, as the ever-improving main street area is a lovely gathering place.
Grand Island's downtown area has some spectacular buildings that have been kept in good repair over the years. The Downtown Grand Island group is working hard to bring back the Main Street feel of years past by promoting the area as a center of entertainment, business, and culture.
Plattsmouth has always had a nice, quaint main street, but recent revitalization efforts have done wonders to really bring back the area's original charm. The buildings stay true to their history even as they house the more modern businesses of today.
Sidney's historic Main Street has been accredited by the National Main Street Center since 2008. Their goal is to give the town's residents and visitors a beautiful, diverse main street that honors the past while creating a unique identity for this thriving community.
Wayne's Main Street really evokes memories of Nebraska's past. The solid architecture and beautified storefronts making walking through the area a pleasant little trip down the proverbial memory lane.
These are the Nebraska main streets which participate in the Main Street network. What other Nebraska towns have excellent revitalized main street areas? Give your favorite town a shout out in the comments!
