The tiny village of Madrid in southwestern Nebraska is located at least 30 minutes from any major cities. In most towns of this size, that would mean at least a 30-minute drive to get to a store for necessities. In this little town – population 231 – the residents are lucky enough to have their very own general store.
Even if you're not from Madrid (pronounced MAD-rid, not muh-DRID), the Madrid General Store is a delightful place to spend a bit of time shopping.
The family-owned business has been operating since about 2010. The building looks like it could be one of the town's original structures, but it was actually built just for this purpose. The store has proven so popular that the building has already undergone an expansion.
Just like the general stores of generations past, you can find a little bit of everything in the Madrid General Store. It's modeled after a traditional Amish/Mennonite shop, and in keeping with that, there's a large variety of baking supplies, spices, and sewing notions. Fresh Wisconsin cheese is just one of the delicious treats you can take home.
Other handmade items line the walls and fill the shelves. Candles, rugs, and children's toys are a few of the store's offerings. But the shop also carries the everyday items that folks would otherwise have to travel to Grant or even Ogallala to buy.
But without a doubt, the most popular items here are the fresh baked goods on Thursday mornings. The cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls make the whole town smell amazing, and pretty much everyone in Madrid lines up to buy some of the goodies. If you're driving in from out of town, Thursday morning is the ideal time to visit.
The Madrid General Store is located at 302 S Perkins Avenue in Madrid. It’s open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fresh baked goods are available on Thursdays. Check out the store’s Facebook page for more information.
While you’re in the area, check out the village of Sutherland. It’s not too far from Madrid, and it’s the perfect place to relax.
