If you grew up in or near McCook, this beloved drive in restaurant is no secret. But for most other folks, this darling little place is a treasure just waiting to be discovered.
Mac's Drive-In has been satisfying hungry folks in McCook for 75 years; its first location opened in 1943, and it's been in its current location since 1957. This family-owned restaurant has had plenty of time to build up a very loyal following.
The short building is easy to miss if you aren't looking out for it. It's not flashy and there are no animated signs advertising its presence. They're not necessary; this place is a local legend.
Pull right up under the awning and get ready to peruse the recently-revamped drive-in menu. You'd better come hungry, because there's a whole lot of delicious food to sample.
Some of the best fried foods in Nebraska are fried up right here at Mac's. The mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, and onion rings all have dedicated fans who sing their praises at every opportunity.
As cool as it is to dine in your car at a genuine retro drive-in, don't miss the opportunity to eat inside at least once. The interior of this classic restaurant looks like a vintage dream come true.
When you sit down at a table, you'll notice a small menu on the wall next to a phone receiver. When you're ready to place your order, simply pick up the receiver and tell your order to the friendly voice on the other end of the line.
When your food is ready, you'll get a return call telling you to go pick it up at the counter. You'll want to skedaddle up there as quickly as possible because this stuff needs to be in your belly now.
Round out your delightful meal with a shake, malt, or other ice cream creation. You really can't go wrong with any of the ice cream choices, but don't forget about the special pies and tarts on the menu - they're all homemade and divine.
