The Lithuanian Bakery and Deli opened in Omaha in 1962, and ever since then it’s been providing some of the tastiest baked goods and deli treats the city has to offer. One of their products has gained such a loyal following that it’s now shipped all over the country.
The original Lithuanian Bakery is located at 5217 S 33rd St. You might not know it to look at it from the outside, but inside this tiny bakery is a whole lot of delicious treats. More recently, the company expanded to a second location at 7427 Pacific Street.
Vytautas and Stefanija Mackevicius started making and selling their favorite treats from their native Lithuania in the 1960s, and almost immediately people began flocking to the family-owned bakery for their delectable Napoleon torte.
This light and flaky delicacy is made of eight layers of wafer-thin pastry along with vanilla and lemon custard, and in the middle is a thin layer of tangy apricot preserves. It's like heaven on a plate. Once they've tried it, some people have driven from hours away to get their fix.
The chocolate torte is nearly as popular. While you once had to travel to Omaha to enjoy these incredible treats, the bakery now ships anywhere in the U.S. Check out their website for more information on their products or to place an order.
You can also ship their just-as-amazing rye breads. They come in several varieties and are well worth the wait it takes to get them if you aren't in the area. The breads, tortes, and everything else you'll find in the bakery and in the deli and cafe is made from scratch using Old World techniques.
As great as it is to get a package full of delicious tortes or breads, there's nothing quite like visiting in person. The smells alone are enough to make you feel like you're in a foodie's paradise. If you're looking for some hard-to-find European exported foods, chances are you'll be able to find them here. There are lots of treats you can't find anywhere else in the area.
If you’ve got your heart set on taking a whole torte home from one of the bakery locations, it’s best to call ahead and make sure they have the size you want available. Get more info on visiting in person or having some treats shipped at their website.
