Going out for ice cream is one of life’s sweetest pleasures. If you’re always on the hunt for the best scoop, look no further. This shop in Omaha’s Blackstone district may be tiny, but it has what may very well be the best ice cream in the city.
Coneflower Creamery in Omaha's Blackstone district serves simply amazing farm-to-cone ice cream. Their small-batch, whole-foods approach to ice cream making shines through in everything they serve.
That dedication to quality hasn't escaped the notice of ice cream enthusiasts. On any given day and pretty much the entire time the shop is open, the line outside of Coneflower looks like this.
The line moves quickly, though, and waiting gives you a chance to decide what to order. Take a look at the daily flavors board and start the agonizing process of picking just one (or two, or three?) to enjoy in a cup or cone.
When you make your way up to the case, you can ask for a sample of the flavors that look interesting but unfamiliar. Be adventurous and sample the "weird" ones - they're usually the best!
Just about everything is made fresh on site, from the sprinkles to the sauces to the cones. What can't be made in-house is carefully sourced from local companies that use only the finest ingredients. Coneflower has partnerships with farms and other companies in Nebraska and Iowa, so you can be sure you're getting the very best of everything the midwest has to offer.
Coneflower's flavors vary from one day to the next, though there are some staples you can always count on - try the butterbrickle, an homage to the flavor that was created right here in Blackstone generations ago. There are always a few non-dairy selections, too - and not just the perfunctory fruit sorbet offered by other ice cream joints. These are luscious vegan flavors that even non-vegans love.
The temporary flavors that cycle through the case are thoughtful, creative concoctions that often incorporate tastes you wouldn't normally associate with ice cream. Burnt toast and rhubarb jam, baklava, and olive oil with citrus cornmeal shortbread are a few of the creations dreamed up by this inventive team.
Everything manages to be delicious - even the unconventional flavors you might be skeptical about trying at first. Each flavor is well balanced and just the right level of sweet. We've never had anything that's less than incredible from here - and moreover, we've never talked to anyone who has.
Go beyond the cone for a whole new level of deliciousness. Get your flavors served in a cup with one of the shop's heavenly handmade sauces and some tasty embellishments (the Amarena cherries are to die for)...
...or enjoy an artisanal treat like an ice cream sandwich, a float made with locally brewed root beer, a boozy float or shake (on certain special nights only)...
For Coneflower devotees who want every meal to contain some of this artisanal goodness, you can take home a pint or order an ice cream cake or pie. We probably don't even need to mention that these cakes are even more delicious than they look, right?
