We who live in Nebraska know what a fantastic place it is. And although we’re ok with you not moving here, we do want you to know what a great vacation you can have in Nebraska. The travel experts at Lonely Planet agree with us and named Lincoln as one of the best places to visit in the US in 2017 – it’s #3 out of 10, in fact. That’s pretty darn impressive. The following are the six essential experiences they say every visitor must have during their stay.
The Haymarket has really come into its own as a tourist attraction. It's a genuinely fun place to spend an afternoon shopping, walking around, and taking in some art.
Lincoln's restaurant scene has earned a well-deserved reputation for being varied and sophisticated. Whether you're looking for classic American food with a twist - like what you'll find at bread&cup, pictured above - or authentic Vietnamese fare, Lincoln's got you covered.
Our gorgeous capitol building got a mention, as The National Museum of Roller Skating and the International Quilt Museum. May we also recommend Morrill Hall, the Sunken Gardens, Pioneers Park, and the Lincoln Children's Zoo?
The magnificent MoPac Trail of course earned a mention, but so did another Lincoln event that not everyone knows about: the Lincoln Hustle. On the final Thursday of every month, cycling enthusiasts get together to have fun and be silly. Check their site for more information.
...and enjoy the youthful energy that permeates this lively college town. Lincoln has such a diverse population thanks to UNL, and that has contributed to a unique environment that you won't find anywhere else in Nebraska.
The music scene in Lincoln has never really faltered, but in recent decades it has surged with new talent, new fans...and the same classic venues that people have known and loved for years.
What do you think of Lonely Planet’s choices? What else would you add to the absolute essential experiences visitors to Lincoln should have?
There are plenty of other towns in Nebraska that you definitely need to visit, and this little one is one of our favorites.
