Discovering something new and exciting right here in our own home state always feels like uncovering buried treasure. This park in Kearney isn’t very well known, but it’s a delightful place to spend a day outdoors.
The Kearney Water Trail officially opened in 2016 as a place for kayak and canoe enthusiasts to enjoy the water in a unique city setting.
The experience is quite unique in that you don't have to go far out into the wilderness to find some truly great kayaking and canoeing. You put in at the northeast corner of Yanney Park and take out just before Central Ave.
The water trail roughly follows the same path as the Hike and Bike Trail and stays relatively calm and even. There's a slight increase in speed near the end, which can make for a pretty exciting experience.
The water trail is open to the public, but if you're a canoeing and kayaking enthusiast you may want to join the Kearney Whitewater Association, a group of like-minded outdoor lovers who get together to float on the water and keep the Water Trail clean.
When summer finally arrives, don’t forget that river tubing is another fun water activity that everyone in Nebraska should try – see some of the best tubing spots here.
