Nebraska is no stranger to ghost towns, as you may already know. But most of them have left nothing but a few building foundations and maybe a cemetery to mark their previous existence. The citizens of Antioch left behind something far more interesting when they left.
Located in Sheridan County in the panhandle, Antioch was once called "the potash capital of Nebraska." Potash was plentiful here, and it was in high demand through the early and mid-20th century.
But when the potash industry went bust, there was no longer a use for these massive concrete and steel structures. It would have been difficult to reuse them for some other purpose - and besides, everyone moved out of the town when the potash plant stopped offering them a living.
It would be hard not to let the imagination run wild...was this once the home of a civilization that has since been wiped out? Were these strange buildings their homes? What happened to the people?
While we know the truth (which isn't too different from the stories of many other ghost towns in Nebraska), it's still fun to look at these ruins as though they are mysterious megaliths.
It's not too hard to imagine a horror film being shot here, is it? Parts of the ruins look scary enough to be cast as the backdrop for a very good ghost story.
