Hiking and eating should be enjoyed together, in our opinion. After you expend all that energy exploring the trails, there’s nothing better than a delicious, filling meal. This hike is one of the most scenic in the state, and it will take you right to one of the most unusual, remarkable restaurants ever.
The Oak Creek Trail stretches between Brainard in Butler County and Valparaiso in Saunders County. The 13-mile trail is one of the most secluded, peaceful stretches in the state.
The crushed limestone path is perfect for walkers and bikers, and there's even a horseback riding trail that runs parallel to the path so everyone can enjoy the journey.
The scenery along the trail is absolutely breathtaking. From scenic bridges and sweet town parks...
...To gorgeous, wide-open spaces...
...To wooded and semi-wooded areas, you'll walk through some of Nebraska's loveliest lands.
About midway on the path, you'll come to the tiny, almost-forgotten town of Loma. The town provides bathrooms for trail travelers, but you'll want to venture a little further to discover a restaurant unlike any other.
The Loma Tavern is an itty-bitty building in this town with a population of barely 50. Despite its remote location, the Loma Tavern is a popular place. Folks roll in from miles around to visit this beloved small-town joint. It has experienced some uncertain times and temporary closures recently, but as of the time of writing, the tavern is still operating.
You won't find any tiny trail snacks here; this is hearty heartland food. The prime rib is legendary, and the rest of the menu is full of unforgettable indulgences.
If you're into lighter eating, there's salad on the menu as well...with a Nebraska twist, of course.
Even if you aren't all that hungry, stop in to enjoy this fun community hotspot where the company is always good. Whether there's a live music performance going on or simply a lot of families gathered for a delicious meal, there are plenty of reasons to think of Loma as your "second homa."
The journey between Brainard and Valparaiso is a beautiful one that every hiker and biker should experience at least once.
Oak Creek Trail offers the best of small-town life, rural living, and delicious Nebraska cuisine all in one place.
No matter which end you start from - or whether you hike the entire distance or a short way - this may just become your new favorite trail.
You can visit the Loma Tavern’s Facebook page for information on specials and events. The tavern is located at 2634 County Road WX, Loma, Nebraska.
