Nebraska certainly has its share of haunted places, ghost towns, and paranormal tales. But the story of our haunted bridge just might be the most troubling one of all. The history of Spring Ranch is pretty sinister, so it’s no wonder that some claim its lone bridge, which is still standing, harbors a tortured spirit who sometimes screams at night.

Spring Ranch was a tiny town located in Clay County that was founded in 1870.

Although it remained an active town until 1940, it never was very populated. In fact, it never had more than 100 residents at any given time.
This ghost town probably would have remained unknown and unremarkable except for one key factor: it was the site of the only known lynching of a female in the state.

And to this day, both the ghost town's cemetery and bridge are said to be haunted by her tortured spirit.
In the late 1800s, a widow named Elizabeth Taylor and her brother, Tom Jones, called Spring Ranch home. They were property owners here, and that led to some grudges and land disputes with the locals.

It all came to a head in 1885, when Elizabeth and Tom were accused of a barn burning and murder. Allegedly the siblings shot a trespasser on their property and then burned another local land owner's barn.

On the morning of March 15, 1885, Elizabeth and Tom were dragged from their beds and beaten by an angry mob.

They were then taken to the local bridge and hanged. Both Elizabeth and Tom claimed they were innocent until their deaths, and some say that you can hear their screams and cries if you visit the bridge at night.
While there's not much of Spring Ranch remaining, the infamous bridge (which has since been rebuilt) and local cemetery are still there.

Elizabeth, Tom, their parents, and Elizabeth's husband are all buried here.
Whether or not the Spring Ranch Bridge and cemetery are actually haunted remains a mystery.

However, considering it's often referred to as Nebraska's screaming bridge, there may be some truth to those claims.
