Nebraska definitely has its share of creepy haunted places that will make you question everything. Often, the ghost tales are so old and so tied in with a town’s history that everyone just accepts them as truth. That’s the case in Scribner, where the Hotel Café and Saloon – known locally as the Old Hotel – has had resident ghosts for as long as almost anyone can remember.
When the Harder Hotel was built in 1901, it was one of the most elegant, modern buildings in the area. The first floor was a restaurant and the second and third floors were dedicated to the hotel. While the hotel was operating, a number of spooky incidents took place on its grounds.
At least three people are thought to have died in the hotel: a man and a woman found dead in separate rooms, and a man who jumped to his death from the top of the building. Today, the hotel is closed and the top two floors are vacant. But the bottom level still operates as a restaurant and bar, the Old Hotel Cafe and Saloon. Patrons there say that the spirits of those who passed in the hotel continue to frequent the restaurant to this day.
Restaurant customers have reported hearing piano music where there is no piano (or sound system) playing. One of the owners saw the specter of a woman dressed in red who vanished in thin air before she could be served. At times, other customers have heard the sounds of children playing nearby...but there were no children to be seen. Occasionally, when someone is working alone in the building, small objects will go missing or move from one place to another although there is no one else there.
The stories of hauntings at the Hotel Café have persisted for so long that non-profit paranormal research group P.R.I.S.M. contacted the owners to arrange an investigation. Over the course of a few visits and many measurements, the team concluded that there are indeed spirits residing within the walls of the Hotel Café and Saloon. They have always been harmless, so there’s no need to fear.
