When most people think of gas station food, they think of soggy sandwiches and hot dogs that have been under a heat lamp for 12 hours. When you’re driving through Nebraska, though, you’ll find some gas stations with absolutely delicious food. These are some customer favorites, in no particular order.
Inside the West Point Travel Plaza is Fiesta Brava, a full-service Mexican restaurant. The food is made with locally-sourced ingredients and served in big portions, so you can get back on the road with a full and happy belly.
The modest truck stop/gas station Jay Bros. is hiding Taste of India, a truly fantastic Indian restaurant that travelers rave about. People even travel long distances just to eat here. You'll understand why when you try it.
There are actually lots more Sapp Bros. in Nebraska and other states, but the Columbus and Omaha locations feature Apple Barrel restaurants. These full service family-friendly restaurants have some of the best fries and homemade desserts this writer has ever tasted.
Shoemaker's Restaurant has been a Lincoln institution since 1967, serving up hearty, homemade, satisfying meals at reasonable prices. They're open 24 hours a day and there's even a game room to keep the kids occupied while you linger with a cup of coffee after a delicious dinner.
This gas station and service center is also home to the Northside Cafe. Their broasted chicken is a local legend, and there's a rotating special entree every day. Don't forget to pick up a delicious dessert to top off your tasty meal.
Biji's Best is a family-owned Indian restaurant inside Suraj's Place, a new gas station and convenience store. The menu is quite small, but what it lacks in variety, it makes up for in amazing flavor. Even if what you're craving isn't on the menu that day, there is a variety of ready meals in the cooler just waiting for you to take them home and warm them up.
Nope, this isn't the famous west coast burger joint. It's a super-tasty cafe inside a convenience store. They offer daily lunch specials, delicious pizza, tacos, and lots more. Eat it there or get it to go — either way it'll be one of the tastiest meals you'll ever get from a convenience store.
Max's Highway Diner is located inside this truck stop, and visitors say this 50s/60s-style diner is one of the best places in the area to stop for a meal. The big menu has something for everyone, from buttermilk pancakes to chicken fried steak to all kinds of burgers.
109 Circle Road, Suite 200, Big Springs
