Nebraska Has A Grand Canyon And It’s Too Beautiful For Words

Everyone has obviously heard of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and you may have even heard of other states’ “little grand canyons.” Nebraska may be the last state you would expect to see such a dramatic geological feature, but our state is full of surprises.

Just outside of the tiny village of Wauneta in southwestern Nebraska is an area of unexpected beauty. Known formally as the Frenchman Creek valley, locals refer to it as Nebraska's Little Grand Canyon. It's a surprising find for passers-through, but people who live nearby are well aware of just how pretty this place is.

Along Route 6 - known to locals as Old Highway 6 - is a scenic lookout spot. Right behind this sign, you can look out over the spectacular scenery of Wauneta's hidden treasure.

The vista is breathtaking. Once you look out over the lovely rolling landscape, you'll understand why this is a favorite stop in southwestern Nebraska. The viewing area was closed from the early 1970s until 1996, when a local Eagle Scout rehabilitated the overlook. Now it's available for the enjoyment of everyone who passes through.

With a view like this, you could be forgiven for thinking that you're not even in Nebraska anymore. Our grand canyon may not be quite as grand as the big one in Arizona, but the area is completely spectacular. It's more than worth a stop the next time you're in the Wauneta area.
