Whether or not you were around during the heyday of the soda fountain, you can no doubt appreciate the charming aesthetic. There’s a bar in the Little Bohemia neighborhood in South Omaha that’s bringing the soda fountain back in a very grownup way.
If you spent time in Omaha between 1924 and 2016, you've probably heard of the legendary Bohemian Cafe. This classic destination served up old-world delights that won over the hearts and stomachs of countless visitors. When the restaurant closed in late 2016, it left a big void in Little Bohemia, a small historic district just south of the Old Market.
But in early 2020, a new venture opened in the cafe's old location. Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors is a fun combination of a classic soda fountain and a modern bar, creating an altogether awesome experience for visitors.
The unique cocktail bar puts an emphasis on fun drinks and retro styling. The interior of the bar has been decorated in an appealing retro-modern style that makes you want to linger over drinks and late-night snacks. There's a jukebox that's ready to rock out, and no one under 21 is allowed inside.
Through no fault of the folks behind the project, Fizzy's grand opening happened to coincide with the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. Almost as soon as Fizzy's opened, it was forced to close temporarily. It reopened with safety measures in place to keep staff and visitors healthy.
One of the coolest parts of hanging out at Fizzy's is the old-fashioned ordering system. Stay at your booth and pick up the phone to call in your order. The whole process is contact-free and the phones and booths are sanitized between each use.
We've talked a lot about the bar's unique location and distinctive style, but what about the drinks? The menu offers standards like beer and wine along with impressive house cocktail selections, but you'll want to turn your eye toward the shakes, floats, and flushes.
These delicious boozy treats are made with quality liquor and freshly-churned ice cream right from Omaha's own outstanding Coneflower Creamery. Are you avoiding dairy or alcohol? No problem - you can get your drink made sans booze or order one made with dairy-free Coneflower ice cream.
Fizzy's also offers a variety of creative ice-cream-free cocktails with tantalizing names like Pop The Clutch, Better Off Dead, and Paloma Anderson. Bring a few friends and order several drinks so you can sample them all!
You can get some tempting snacks or even a meal to go along with your cocktails. Classic diner food like fried bologna sandwiches, pimento cheese frenchies, and fried chicken takes center stage, but be sure to ask what the TV dinner special is for the night!
While business hours and occupancy are being affected by COVID-19, you can enjoy contactless curbside pickup of drinks and eats; just call ahead to order. Check out Fizzy’s website or Facebook page to find out more about this utterly charming cocktail bar.
