Many of Nebraska’s hikes are more or less horizontal thanks to our terrain. But there’s one unique hike that will take you vertical and lead you to some of the most spectacular views in the whole state.
The Scott Lookout Tower is located in the Nebraska National Forest, Bessey Ranger District, just outside of Halsey.
It's still used as a fire lookout point to help rangers spot forest fires - and you can even climb it for yourself for a unique view of the surrounding area.
The tower is located in the midst of the largest human-planted forest in the country. It's not too far from the Bessey Campground and Recreational complex, but it feels extremely remote.
Climbing to the top of this 50-foot-tall tower is a bit of a workout for just about anyone, but don't worry - the effort will be 100% worth it once you get up there.
If you're feeling energetic, you can hike to the tower from the Bessey Recreation Recreation Complex. If you'd rather save your energy for climbing the tower itself, you can simply drive right up to the nearby parking pull-off.
There is no fee to climb the tower, and it’s open year-round. You can arrange a tour of the inside (with a couple days’ notice) by calling (308) 533-2257. Be aware that the climb is rated as challenging, and the tower is not accessible. The only way to reach the top is by climbing the stairs.
To get to the tower from Highway 2, turn south into the forest. After crossing the river, stay to the right on State Spur 86B. Follow 86 B about 3 miles to its end, which is a loop around the tower.
