We all have our favorite time of year in Nebraska, but after a long, hot summer nothing feels better than the transition into a cooler fall. In addition to the pumpkin-flavored everything that seems to hit restaurants all around the country this time of year, these are the things we think are the greatest about fall in Nebraska.
Apple time is a BIG deal here, particularly in the eastern part of the state where you can enjoy Nebraska City's annual Applejack Festival. Tens of thousands of people come out to celebrate this incredibly versatile fruit and to sample cider, pie, cake, doughnuts, fritters, ice cream...EVERYTHING made of apples. But don't worry - apple harvest-themed festivals can be found all around the state!
Camping is great in the spring and summer, too...there's just something special about the crisper, cooler outdoor air in the fall. It's nice to step out of the tent in the morning and not be instantly bogged down with humidity. Plus, the colorful leaves make for the best backdrop, don't they?

In addition to pumpkin-flavored everything and apple-based everything, fall brings so many delicious treats. Fair food and caramel apples are some of the best, and we think that barbecue from a tailgating party somehow tastes WAY better than barbecue from your backyard.

New England may have the foliage tourism market cornered, but people don't know what they're missing here in Nebraska. When the leaves burst into vibrant fall colors, it's like a whole different world. They don't actually stay on the trees very long, but that's okay - jumping into leaf piles and trudging through crunchy leaves on the ground is pretty great, too.
The atmosphere in Nebraska changes palpably once the Huskers start playing. Yard work gets put off for a day or two, the talk around the office shifts to sports, and people start wearing even more Husker gear than usual.

Watching farmers harvest the fruits of their labor is a truly beautiful sight. The fields transform and usher in a new season's landscape.
The first day of the year that you can comfortably slip on that soft hooded sweatshirt and head out for a refreshing walk is a beautiful, beautiful day. Of course, knowing Nebraska, you'll be back in a tank top the next day, but hoodie weather is bound to return.
I'm not a hunter myself, but I know well the excitement that starts buzzing around prime hunting season. You can almost see the little thought bubbles over hunters' heads as they daydream of their first big score of the year.

It's a yearly ritual for a lot of families: head out to the pumpkin patch every fall, let the kids pick out a few pumpkins, and enjoy the harvest time activities. Depending on which patch you pick, it can be an all-day adventure that goes way beyond pumpkins.
You always know that summer is almost over when fair time finally arrives. It's like our state's last hurrah for the year. It's not only a time to ride the rides, go to concerts, and eat deep-fried foods, but also to show off our talents. Livestock competitions, quilt displays, gardening exhibits, 4H exhibits, and so much more - it's all part of what it means to be a Nebraskan, and it's all part of the greatest time of year.
