9. Hear the historic hoofbeats of the Pony Express.

10. Stop and watch the wildlife.

11. Let the wildlife come to you.
If you want to be guaranteed to see wildlife up close and personal, the Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari in Ashland is an excellent place to spend some time. Stay in your car and drive through animal habitats, then (if you're up for more adventure) get out and visit the more traditional animal displays.

12. Touch history at this pristine prairie.
Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center near Lincoln is a stunning virgin prairie that you can visit all year. No matter the time of year, this is a perfect birdwatching location and a wonderful place to get in touch with nature.

13. Visit one of the "other" zoos.
We all know about the big, famous zoo in Omaha - but did you know there are some smaller rural zoos dotting the state? The Horn T Zoo near Monroe is a charming little spot that houses common and exotic animals. The zoo is only open during the summer, so get ready to visit once the weather turns warm.

14. Walk in pioneers' footsteps.
Western Nebraska is positively packed with museums, monuments, and other sites that pay tribute to the hardy spirit of the immigrants who traveled the Oregon Trail.
