It’s often said that in Nebraska, the sky goes all the way to the ground. We’ve got some seriously splendid sky views here that could impress just about anyone. There are loads of reasons to love all of our state parks and recreation areas, but today we’ll look at one where you can feel completely at home in nature.
Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area is located near McCook in southwestern Nebraska.
They're all terrific and worth a visit, but we're partial to the lower-traffic Red Willow and its ample natural appeal. You're near the city, but it feels like you're far more removed from civilization.
Anglers will love the fishing here; it's been rated some of the best in the entire state. Fish cleaning stations and ADA-accessible boat ramps and docks are available.
Hunters also flock to Red Willow for the fantastic pheasant, deer, and rabbit hunting opportunities. The thickets and canyons are home to a large population of each, and we don't know of any hunter who has gone home from here disappointed.
The lake itself is an ideal place to spend a day boating, floating, or swimming. All boats are allowed, and there is a designated family swimming beach.
To get the most out of a visit, we definitely recommend staying a few days. There are RV and primitive sites, but this isn't like some campgrounds where you may as well just be staying in the middle of town. Even at the RV pads with electric hookups, you'll feel pleasantly removed from ordinary life.
There's really nothing better than seeing this gorgeous view last thing at night and first thing in the morning. It gets so dark out here that you can see millions of stars; count them as you fall asleep to the summer sounds we all know and love.
This short video from the Game and Parks Commission gives an awesome overview of what it’s like to spend a day enjoying this beautiful recreation area.
Find Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area on the north shore of Hugh Butler Lake, just a few miles north of McCook.
