Fall is a magical time here in Nebraska. The hot days of summer begin to fade into the cooler days of autumn and our thoughts turn to visions of fluffy blankets, warm tea, and – maybe best of all – freshly picked apples.
DeGroot Orchards is in northeastern Nebraska between Norfolk and the small town of Madison. The DeGroot family has been living in the area and growing apples on these 40 acres for nearly 80 years.
The little seasonal produce stand comes alive in the early fall when the apples begin to ripen. The Galas are typically the first to be ready for harvesting - you can expect those around mid-September. You've got to try the delicious apple cider when you stop in!
While DeGroot Orchards isn't a U-pick operation, they do offer guided tours of the farm. Doesn't apple season seem like the perfect time to go explore these rows of lovely trees? Call ahead to schedule your own orchard tour.
When harvest season rolls around, people come from far and wide to taste this delicious fruit. DeGroot is said to have the best apples around, and their many loyal customers will happily agree. Their more than 22 different varieties of apples become ripe at different times, so no two visits will be exactly the same.
This neat little orchard doesn't stop at apples. They also grow watermelons, squash, and pumpkins. When the pumpkins are orange enough, visitors can venture out into the field to choose their very own. DeGroot Orchards offers reasonable prices for all of their produce, making it the perfect place to get your fresh fruits every year.
