You already know that Nebraskans are some of the smartest, friendliest people you’ll ever meet – but did you know we also have a lot of unusual hidden talents? Plenty of Nebraskans have set world records for their talents, collections, and more. These are a few of the most memorable.
1. World's Largest Kolache
This feat was pulled off in - where else? - the village of Prague, Nebraska. At its centennial celebration in 1987, the town's first attempt to break the record weighed in at 2,605 pounds. Just five years later, the method was perfected and the town created a massive pastry weighing in at an impressive 5,200 pounds. Both times, the gigantic versions of the enormous Czech pastry were cut up and distributed to everyone in attendance.
2. World's Largest Geodesic Dome/World's Largest Indoor Desert
This huge dome at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is among the most unusual structures in the world. It's not only the largest geodesic dome on the planet; it also contains the largest indoor desert on Earth. If you've ever walked through the Desert Dome, you know how amazing it is!
3. Largest Collection of Muppets Memorabilia
The single largest collection of Muppets memorabilia belongs to Rhet Safranek of Merna, Nebraska. Rhet began collecting Muppets merch when he was just a kid; now, he has more than 1,840 items! We wonder what Kermie has to say about that.
4. World's Tallest Mohican
The record for the world's tallest mohawk spike belongs to a man in Japan. But the world record for the largest Mohican - the traditional on-end hairstyle - is held by Nebraskan Eric Hahn. He set the hair-raising record back in 2008 with his impressive 27-inch-tall hairdo.5. World's Tallest Lincoln Logs Structure VIDEO In April of 2013, a group of architects and architecture students got together to build a structure that would benefit Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln. In a smidge under six hours, the team built a tower that was 12' 4" tall and used 10,036 Lincoln Logs.
6. World's Largest Collection of Finger Puppets
Kindergarten teacher Janet Warner of Arlington knows that puppets are a terrific way to teach kids about language, feelings, and much more. She uses her huge collection of 350-some finger puppets to convey important lessons to her students.
