Having grown up in Washington, Andrea is a self-admitted Pacific Northwest snob. In their opinion, there's simply nowhere else in the country with the Evergreen State's beauty. It may be known as a bedroom community to the nearby cities of Omaha and Lincoln, but Ashland is easily one of the best cold-weather-friendly destinations for a winter getaway in Nebraska. This small community is brimming with charm, offering families and solo travelers an array of fun, snowy activities to fill their itineraries.
Though it's fought hard to retain its rural character, Ashland has grown a lot in the past decade. That said, its population remains just over 3,000, meaning this quaint community is still a fantastic small-town getaway that's conveniently located under an hour from both Omaha and Lincoln.
I think Ashland is worth a visit any time of year, but there's no denying it comes alive under a blanket of snow. Winter weather accentuates the charm of the town's narrow streets and huddled brickwork buildings.
If you visit Ashland after a snowfall, you're also bound to meet the locals! Cold weather brings out the best in Ashland residents, who pull together to clear municipal sidewalks and help each other out of jams.
Though it's closed over winter, a spring-time dusting is also a unique time to visit the animals at The Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari, a 440-acre park on the outskirts of Ashland. Many of the species residing there are adapted for the cold and only demonstrate certain behaviors when there's snow on the ground.
If you've got adventure in mind, grab your snowshoes and head out to Eugene T. Mahoney State Park. Here, you'll find scores of residents enjoying some winter fun on toboggans. Sometimes there are even skiers taking on the Mahoney Short Loop.
With its small-town hospitality and array of activities, Ashland belongs on your radar regardless of the season. Still, there's something special about this community when it snows, making it a fantastic winter getaway in Nebraska.
Are you looking for a winter getaway in Nebraska? Check out Ashland. This button-sized community delivers big-city recreation, and it’s just waiting to become your new favorite snowy destination. Consider staying the weekend and getting to know this special Cornhusker spot.
