Summer is nearing its final days, and here in Nebraska that always gets us thinking of one thing: apples! Our state grows massive amounts of apples every year, and in the fall all sorts of apple-flavored treats begin appearing everywhere. We love them all, but there’s one that’s so refreshing we wish it was available all year.
There are tons of things to love about Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, but today we're singling out Porter's (formerly the Pie Garden Cafe), the little restaurant attached to the Apple House Market.
The slushies start out with Arbor Day Farm's signature cider. It's made from fresh-from-the-tree apples and bottled immediately, so every sip is like biting into a juicy ripe apple.
Then with a little partial freezing, the cider magically turns into a sweet and all-natural slushie. In the picture below, it's served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel - undoubtedly the crowd-favorite method of cider slushie delivery.
Stop in before or after a day of apple picking and exploring the Tree Adventure and enjoy this delicious treat alongside a piece of fresh apple pie a la mode. (Not to steal the slushie's thunder, but this apple pie with ice cream is possibly the best on the planet.)
And for a more grownup experience, check out the Applejack, the orchard's incredible boozy slushie. It combines fresh apple cider slushie with Jack Daniel's Honey - just pace yourself because they're so tasty that you'll be tempted to keep going back for more!
In addition to the unforgettable apple slushies, the Apple House Market is filled with other apple treats, including some unbelievable apple donuts. Don't leave without a few of these goodies to tide you over until your next visit.
Arbor Day Farm is open June-November and hours change seasonally; check out the official website for more information on hours, admission prices, and special events. Head on over to Facebook for even more great stuff, including news about everyone’s favorite fall event, the Applejack Festival. Read more about that special event in this article from the archives.
