You can find at least one locally-owned restaurant in just about every small town in Nebraska, and we’re of the opinion that they’ve all got their very own charms. This place has an extra helping of charm thanks to its unique location and the loving care of its owners.
Sandstone Grill in Burwell was born from the love of food shared by two sisters from Nebraska. Tenise and Tammy are originally from St. Paul, and both went on to become chefs in larger cities. In August 2005, they moved to Burwell to begin their new project.
Burwell, the home of Nebraska's Big Rodeo is a destination town for quite a few people, and it boasts plenty of restaurant choices. However, the sisters saw a need for healthier local options, both on the comfort food side and on the higher-end gourmet side.
The menu is eclectic and fun and filled with every kind of food to satisfy your cravings. From pork chops to Caesar salads to all kinds of burgers to a portabella mushroom sandwich, the carefully thought-out menu has something to please every palate.
There's an emphasis on freshness here, and everything that can be made in-house is. The fare really stands out against many of the other dining choices in Burwell.
Seasonal food and drink specials are especially popular, and every one is designed and prepared with care. The beautiful setting really enhances the dining experience: the Sandstone is located next to the Burwell Hotel and shares its classic tin ceiling, wood floors, and romantic, old-world feel.
No matter what you choose for dinner and drinks, be sure to leave room for dessert. The pie menu is almost as long as the dinner menu, and the pie is definitely one of the most raved-about selections. Varieties rotate, but don't worry - there will be a fantastic one (or four, or five...) each and every time you visit.
