In the past few decades, small Nebraska towns have seen a massive loss of small, locally-owned businesses. Grocery stores, in particular, have been disappearing from rural locales at record rates. When a small town is able to keep its grocery store, it also holds onto a strong sense of community. This unassuming store in Central City has stuck around for more than half a century and today provides everything from produce and meat to freshly-baked goods and newly-released movies.
Central City Mall, also known as Jim's Foods Central City IGA, has been a staple of the Central City area for more than 65 years. Far from just a little corner shop, this is the place you go when you need anything at all.
Stop in on your way to a party to pick up a meat, fruit, or veggie tray, or something like this amazing-looking taco dip. You're sure to be popular when you're the one bringing the most delicious snacks!
And of course, this is a great store for your regular weekly shopping as well. Look out for coupons and specials to save you money, and keep an eye on the shelves for new and interesting products to try.
Jim's has all of the departments you'd expect to find in your hometown market, but there are some excellent extras that add a lot of value to this store. Enjoy house-made smokehouse sausages, a bakery with fresh-daily treats, and a one-hour photo department.
This is also the place to go when you need prescriptions, basic home or office supplies, live plants (in summer), movie rentals, and professionally decorated cakes.
The grocery store tends to be the social center of a small town, and when a community loses its store it also loses some of its sense of community. Central City Mall and other stores like it help support local economies and local people. That's what Nebraska is all about!

There may not be as many of them as there were a few decades ago, but the small-town supermarket isn’t extinct yet! Lots of little towns still have their own locally-owned stores. Which one is your favorite? Show it some love in the comments!
