Camping usually means either pounding some tent stakes into the ground or setting up your camper at just the right site. But a campground in Waterloo (in Douglas County) gives you a much more exciting option: you can sleep inside a real Union Pacific caboose.

Two Rivers State Recreation Area boasts 10 retired yellow Union Pacific cabooses, all lined up in a neat row. They're even set on tracks to increase the authenticity of the railroad experience.

They have each been remodeled and made into comfortable cabins that can accommodate up to six people. The caboose cabins are definitely not luxury accommodations, but they are a lot of fun, especially for train enthusiasts.

Each cabin is also equipped with air conditioning, a kitchenette, a bathroom with a shower, seating area, outdoor grill, and deck. You'll need to bring your own bedding, pillows, towels, and cooking and eating utensils.

One of the best amenities is the setting the cabooses are in. Two Rivers SRA is an exceptionally beautiful place to spend a day or even a week.
