There’s something about a handcrafted sausage that the mass-produced kind could never match. The perfect blend of spices, the crisp snap when you take a bite, the delectable texture…it’s all part of the experience at this tiny sausage shop in this also-tiny village.
Ashton is an itty-bitty place not too far from Loup City and St. Paul. Fewer than 200 people call this village home, and you can be reasonably sure that they've all enjoyed the offerings from the town's sausage shop.
Maschka's Sausage Shop has been hand-making delectable meaty treats for more than a century, though the business has undergone some changes over that time.
Ollie Maschka began making the shop's signature ring bologna in the early 1900s. At that time, you could buy it in Ashton at Maschka's Market. Ollie passed the torch to his son, and today Ollie's great-grandson, Jeff Harrington, runs Maschka's Sausage Shop.
There are lots of other delicious treats to try, too, including bratwurst, Polish sausage, jerky, hot dogs, beef sticks, and more. Every flavor combination is perfectly balanced; every finished product is so fresh you'll wonder why you ever bought the pre-packaged grocery store stuff.
While you can always walk into the shop and carry off some sausage to cook at home, we highly recommend getting a fresh, hot sausage on a bun whenever you can. You'll often find a Maschka's booth at area events where you can snag a Polish dog, brat, or a variety of other products, cooked and ready to bite into. What could be tastier than that?
Find Maschka’s Sausage Shop at 11 E Duncan Street, Ashton, NE 68817. Learn more about the shop on their website, and keep up with future events, specials, and other news on their Facebook page.
While you’re in the area hunting down some of the state’s greatest food, be sure to stop in nearby Dannebrog for some of the best pizza in Nebraska.
