Summer is just about to breathe its last, and fall will be here before we know it. And you know what that means: a trip to the apple orchard! The state’s most beloved orchards can be found in eastern Nebraska, and this one may be the granddaddy of them all.
Arbor Day Farm is located in Nebraska City on the estate of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day.
The 160-acre property has become a beloved annual destination for families from Nebraska and beyond. It's full of great activities, and there's sure to be something for everyone to love.
The you-pick apple orchard is a great family togetherness activity. You can wander the rows of trees looking for the perfect apples to take home. Be sure to get a few varieties so you can taste them all - you may just find a new favorite.
You'll encounter lots of special spots along the trail offering educational opportunities, entertainment, and the chance for the little ones to work off some energy.
There are a couple of different directions you can go on the trails. Visiting the 50-foot-high treehouse is highly recommended. Inside, there are even more opportunities to learn while playing. The view from the top is fantastic!
If you'd prefer to take it easy, opt for the Discovery Ride. You'll hop aboard an adorable trailer and embark on a one-hour tour all across Arbor Day Farm, learning lots of interesting facts along the way from a Nature Interpreter. Don't be too shy to ask questions - they love sharing their knowledge!
No trip to the farm is complete without a stop at the Apple House Market. You'll find locally-produced foods, Nebraska-made crafts, and delicious Arbor Day Farms signature wines. Pro tip: do the wine tasting for $7. You get four tastes and you can even take the glass home with you!
Of course, the Apple House Market also features fresh fruit picked right from the orchard (and some from beyond the orchard). Take home a jug of cider so you can relive your fun fall day trip even after it's over.
Don't forget to grab a meal or a snack from the little restaurant. You'll find a small but tasty menu with items like burgers, hot dogs, sausages, and chips. But the apple pie is the star of this show, and you should not pass up a chance to try it.
As if that weren't enough to keep you busy all day, there are other seasonal activities to enjoy! Visit the corn maze to see if you can find your way out...
There really is no place quite like Arbor Day Farm for ringing in the autumn season and celebrating life-giving trees. Visit their website or Facebook page for directions, admissions information, and other important information.
J. Sterling Morton’s house, Arbor Lodge, is also part of the Arbor Day Farm complex. Be sure to cross the street for a visit while you’re there! Find out more here.
