When we think of island life… or even island visits… Montana is not exactly the first place that comes to mind. However, some of our most massive lakes are hiding some beautiful islands. And while you won’t find palm trees and white sand there, you can always cruise out and enjoy the peace and quiet. Most Montanans don’t even know there’s an island on Lake Koocanusa.

Lake Koocanusa is located in the northwest corner of the state, so it's a bit of a hidden gem.

We actually share this magnificent body of water with British Columbia.
The lake is held back by the 422-foot-tall Libby Dam, which is located about 16 miles upstream from Libby.

The dam generates enough electricity for the daily needs of about 500,000 homes.

...but what many don't know is that the lake also harbors a tiny island called Yarnell Island.

Yarnell Island is located in the southern part of the lake, and you can only access it by private boat.
At high water levels, there are actually two islands, which is why you'll sometimes hear the name Yarnell Islands.

But when water levels are lower, as they often are, it's a single island.
There is a seasonal (rustic) campground on the island, and you're always welcome to boat out for a day trip.

Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it at one of the many picnic tables. Try your luck at fishing, too -- the lake is full of rainbow trout, west slope cutthroat, brook trout, and kokanee salmon.

If you have a boat, check out Yarnell Island on Lake Koocanusa this summer. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll have it all to yourself.
