Like most states, Montana is full of beautiful structures and quirky roadside attractions that help make our land unique. And while some of them — like the Garden of 1,000 Buddhas — aren’t exactly typical, there are a few that make us smile and say, “Only in Montana.”
Today, we’re giving a shout-out to those one-of-a-kind Montana monuments.
1. The Cut Bank Penguin
Only in Montana would we brag about having the coldest weather on Earth (or at least in the nation). What can we say... life here is for the tough only.
2. Cathedral of Saint Helena
Of course, we're not the only place with a Catholic cathedral —but ours is a unique part of our state history. Modeled by architect A.O. Von Herbulis after the Votivkirche in Vienna, Austria, this incredible structure earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and Helena wouldn't look the same without it.
3. The Bleu Horses
If you've ever been driving along Montana’s Highway 287 just north of Three Forks and spotted some horses on the horizon, you may have assumed they were real. These deceptive sculptures are the work of Jim Dolan, a well-known local artist.
4. Pompey's Pillar
This rock formation alone is pretty unique, and the fact that it has William Clark's signature (as in THE Lewis and Clark) carved into it makes it even more special. What other state has that bragging right?
5. The Montana Bale Trail, Hobson — Windham
The creativity of the Montana Bale Trail is nothing short of amhayzing. Every September, locals gather for the "What the Hay" festival, which has grown from a small friendly neighborhood competition into a statewide celebration. Only in Montana indeed.
6. The Muffler Man, Billings
The Muffler Man became a Montanan in 2010, but it seems like he's always been a part of Billings. You'll find him on Elk River Road smoking a cigarette and tipping his hat to the world. There's also a Muffler Man near Great Falls, but we're not sure if they're related.
7. Old Shep Monument
The sweet story of Old Shep is one of love, hope, and loyalty: three of the things we value most here in the Treasure State.
8. Our Lady of the Rockies, Butte
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, our lovely lady stands at the top of the mountains, watching over us. She also happens to be the 4th tallest statue in the country, which is pretty great.
9. The silver dollar collection at the 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar, Haugan
What can we say... we value unique collections here. This happens to be the largest collection of its kind, and besides, the place is really fun to visit.
