The next time you’re heading to Glacier National Park, pay attention when you near Columbia Falls. You might see signs for the Montana Vortex and House of Mystery… and if you’ve never stopped to check it out for yourself, you really should. Some say it’s the gravitational anomaly it claims to be, some say it’s a blast to experience, others say it’s a total scam. But whatever it is, it’s definitely strange.
According to the website, the Montana Vortex is "a genuine quantum or gravitational anomaly that may redefine the laws of physics and nature." Montana is not the only state to have this attraction—the Oregon Vortex, for example, has the similar "gravity hill" effect. A gravity hill, also known as a mystery hill, is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion that makes a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope. There are hundreds of known gravity hills worldwide.
But what sets the Montana Vortex apart from the rest is that it is actually comprised of three vortexes tangled up with each other, making the area more dynamic than any of the others.
"The Platform" is a level cement area that gives you the illusion of growing and shrinking when you stand on either end. The Aura Spot was discovered in 2007, which allows you to see the electromagnetic field known as your aura (or just a light trick, depending on your beliefs).
The House of Mystery is a crooked shack that sits right in the middle of the most dynamic vortex. The slanted walls and floors of the house provide plenty of opportunities for photos and laughs with your family as you explore.
Whether or not you believe that these energy fields have any kind of supernatural or paranormal power, exploring the Montana Vortex is a fun way to spend an afternoon on your way to or from Glacier. Stop by, take a tour, take some photos and see what you think. The attraction is open from April through October and costs $10 for adults. Have you visited the Montana Vortex and House of Mystery?
