A state like Montana certainly offers tons of ways to have an adventure. From a fun hike around Lake Como to visiting a local ranch, each activity is undoubtedly more unique than the next. But, not every day out has to be worth writing home about. Sometimes, it’s nice to simply get outside in a small town and enjoy the surroundings. Add a delicious stop at a local restaurant and you’ve got the makings of a truly fantastic (and simple!) day. We love the idea of taking this small-town hike in Montana and then heading back for a meal at this local organic spot.
To enjoy this fun day exploring the Bitterroot Valley, start by driving up forest service road 735 to the Blodgett Canyon Overlook Trail trailhead. Depending on the season, road conditions can be muddy and slippery so be prepared with the right type of vehicle.
The 2.8-mile trail is great for working up an appetite! While the route isn't considered challenging, the elevation gain is about 530 feet so you'll be heading up for a portion of your journey.
The hike begins on the Canyon Creek Trail. Pay attention and make sure to stay right to continue along the Blodgett Overlook Trail 101. The beauty begins immediately and continues all along the route. Depending on the season you might see wildflowers, animals, or other local wonders.
You'll reach the top of the trail about 1.5 miles into your hike. Take in the views of the Bitterroot Valley and the Sapphire Mountain Range before turning around and heading back to the trailhead the same way you came.
Once you get back to Hamilton, you should be nice and hungry! Perfect timing for a stop at Suzette's Organics. This Organic Filipino restaurant specializes in delicious food that's filling and made with the highest quality ingredients.
The Blodget Canyon Overlook Trail is accessible year round, but be mindful of seasonal closures that can occur. For the most current information, visit the official Forest Service website.
