One of the best things about spending time in Montana is the scenery. Whether you’re out on an incredible hike or simply enjoying time outside in your backyard, there’s always something to see. While it’s impossible to choose the best ways to see the local views, we think a scenic drive is one of the best. And, of course, a road trip is always a great idea! This scenic drive in Montana offers a bypass to I-90 and provides some of the most incredible views along the way.
While I-90 is the most direct route between two points, it's not necessarily the most beautiful. That's why the Pintler Scenic Byway is so great. Linking Anaconda with Drummond, this 64-mile route offers a great alternative way to travel, while also providing some seriously epic views.
You'll want to have at least an extra hour for your journey since detouring away from I-90 will take some extra time. The entire trip is lovely, but one of the best parts is following the northern shoreline of Georgetown Lake.
Travelers will make their way through the Anaconda Range, eventually leading down to Flint Creek Canyon. From the canyon, you'll enter Philipsburg Valley, which also offers magnificent views. Be sure to set aside some time to explore the small town of Philipsburg.
For a good sense of what you might experience on the trip, take a look at this timelapse video created by Sirviendo a Cristo:
The Pintler Scenic Byway can be taken year-round, but always be mindful of the weather.
After you’ve taken this scenic drive in Montana, consider one of the many others that can be found in the state. These beautiful byways are a great place to start.
