Here in Montana, we don’t mind going for a nice, long drive, especially if a mouthwatering meal is what awaits us. These rural restaurants have such stellar reputations, you won’t mind putting a few extra miles on your car to reach them.
1. Fort Rockvale Restaurant & Lounge, 101 Rockvale Rd., Joliet
Whether you're craving biscuits and gravy with a bloody Mary or a big, juicy burger, Fort Rockvale Restaurant & Lounge always delivers. This casino and eatery is just a short drive from Billings, and they're known for their friendly service and hearty meals.
2. Frontier Bar and Supper Club, 28904 US Highway 2, Dunkirk
Located just outside of Shelby, this little steakhouse doesn't look like much from the outside. But between the plates piled high with meat (or seafood) and potatoes and the massive desserts, you'll be impressed.
3. The Wandering Gringo, U.S. 2, Columbia Falls
If you pass through Columbia Falls on your way to Glacier National Park, make time to stop at The Wandering Gringo. The tacos and enormous burritos are out of this world.
4. Beef N Bone Steakhouse, 19 Ulm North Frontage Rd., Ulm
While there's no shortage of wonderful steakhouses here in Montana, this one is worth going out of your way to enjoy. The meat is top quality, most of the ingredients used are Montana grown and raised, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
5. Land of Magic Steakhouse, 11060 Front St., Logan
It's hard to top the perfectly cooked steaks at Land of Magic, which sits just down the street from a former Montana icon, Sir Scott's Oasis (which sadly, is now closed). But the twice baked potatoes here are what will truly make your meal legendary.
6. Beartooth Cafe, 207 E Main St., Cooke City
Unless you're one of the 140 Montanans that calls Cooke City home, you'll have to drive for awhile to dine at the Beartooth Cafe. But despite its remote location, its reputation is outstanding, and for good reason.
7. Broad Axe Lodge & Restaurant, 1237 E Fork Rd., Sula
At the Borad Axe Lodge, you can stay in a cozy cabin and enjoy the beauty of nature. And you definitely won't starve -- the onsite restaurant serves extraordinary charbroiled steaks, prime rib, seafood, and desserts.
8. Durum Restaurant, 309 2nd Ave. S., Glasgow
Glasgow may not be known as a hot spot for dining, but this casual steakhouse never disappoints. Just try a burger or steak dinner and you'll see what we mean.
9. The Grizzly Bar, 1 Main St., Roscoe
This infamous eatery helped coin the infamous phrase, Where the hell is Roscoe? But if you've ever made the drive, you know both the food and the ambiance are excellent.
You’ll find some of our best eateries in some of our most remote locations. For example, check out The Jersey Lilly .
