The Charming Montana General Store That's Been Open Since The Civil War Days
Several decades before Montana achieved statehood, the Civil War was being waged between our northern and southern states. And while the Montana Territory had little to do with said war, our early settlers were exploring, working, and building lives here in what is now the Treasure State. Rank’s Mercantile has been around since those days, making it the oldest continually operated general store in Montana.

For reference, the Civil War was fought from 1861 - 1865.

And for that, we are thankful, because if you're in the area, it's always fun to browse.

It also sold groceries, candy, and other household items.

You can still buy men's frontier clothes and women's Victorian clothing here (and children's clothes as well).

You can even check out the book selection online before you arrive - something that would have been rather foreign in the 1860s.

Not only is the inventory great, but you'll be able to say you found the gift at Montana's oldest store.

Check it out the next time you happen to find yourself in Virginia City.
