Living in Montana means adventure is never far away. And now that winter is on its way out, the cabin fever is strong in the Treasure State. If you’re feeling like going on a little excursion once the weather warms up, give one of these places a try.
1. National Bison Range
Not only is this one of the oldest and most unique reserves in the state, but it’s a beautiful, scenic drive to get there. About 500 bison, elk, antelope, eagles and many other species of wildlife live at the refuge.
2. Wild Horse Island
The largest island in Flathead Lake is only accessible by boat. If you make it, you’ll see incredible views and wildlife, including the handful of wild horses that still inhabit it.
3. Canyon Ferry Lake
Anyone near Helena, Butte or Great Falls will have easy access to Canyon Ferry Lake. Go fishing or swimming in the lake or enjoy a quiet weekend camping.
4. Yellowstone ZipLine and Canopy Tours
Want to see Yellowstone in a whole new way? Head to the Yellowstone ZipLine and Canopy Tours at the North Entrance to the park.
5. The Gallatin River
Feeling extremely adventurous? Get a group together for whitewater rafting. Take in the incredible scenery in an exciting way.
6. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex
Located just south of Glacier National Park, this land extends for 60 miles along the Continental Divide. This is one of the most completely preserved mountain ecosystems in the world, so if you really want to get away from it all, this is your best bet.
7. Hyalite Creek Trail
Hyalite Creek Trail, which is south of Bozeman, is the perfect place for a waterfall-filled scenic hike.
8. Lewis and Clark Caverns
If you’ve never taken the guided tour of the massive limestone cavern, there’s no time like the present.
9. Four Dances Recreation Area
You’ll find this trailhead just outside of Billings. This is where you’ll be able to see the best views of the city.
10. Going-to-the-Sun Road
Glacier National Park is always an adventure, and driving the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road stretch is a great way to spend part of your day. Unpredictable spring snow storms or other weather-related events can slow down the plowing process, so make sure it’s open before you go.
