Whether you’re a believer or not, Montana has its fair share of ghost stories and haunted places. And since Halloween is a mere month away, we thought it might be fun to revisit some of the spooky spots we’ve explored in the past. From the abandoned prison to the century-old hotels, it’s safe to say that Montana has its share of eerie places.
1. Old Montana Prison Museum, Deer Lodge
There have been reports of paranormal activity at the
Old Prison Museum for many years. And if you've been, you must admit that walking through the building alone can sometimes cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand up.
2. Sacajawea Hotel, Three Forks
3. The Grand Union Hotel, Fort Benton
Speaking of haunted hotels... this one, which dates back to 1882, has quite a history. Long ago, a cowhand drunkenly rode his horse into the hotel and up the main staircase before the bar manager shot and killed him. To this day, phantom hoofbeats can be heard on the staircase, and a male ghost in a long coat has been spotted across the hotel. If you stay in Room 202, you just might see mysterious blue lights dance across the room.
4. The Lobby Bar, Great Falls
The Lobby Bar can be found in the lobby of the old Davenport Hotel and is apparently home to between 12 and 20 spirits, according to the many paranormal investigators who have explored it. Employees and guests alike have had terrifying experiences here. Take a ghost tour and see for yourself.
5. Mount Moriah Cemetery, Butte
It's unsurprising that a city like Butte would have a
haunted cemetery, given its mining history. But people have been having otherworldly experiences here since the 1970s.
6. Elks Lodge 537, Miles City
If you visit the Elks Lodge in Miles City, the movement you see out of the corner of your eye might not be your imagination. This was a hotspot in its early years, during prohibition—it was the place to go for drinks and entertainment, and rumor has it that Bonnie and Clyde once played cards there. There was also a suicide at Elks Lodge in 1936, and the ghost of a woman in a long dress is often spotted in the halls.
7. Little Bighorn Battlefield, Crow Agency
If there was ever a place that was understandably haunted,
this would be it. This battlefield was the sight of a lot of bloodshed, so it's no wonder that it's prime spot for paranormal activity, from sounds of men screaming to apparitions at night.
8. The Frenchwoman's Road, west of Helena
This
haunted hike comes with a tragic story. Madame Guyot, the wife of Constant Guyot, was murdered (probably by her husband) inside the hostel she ran. And since 1877, Montanans have been seeing the ghost of Madam Gayot in this area.
9. The old Montana Children’s Center, Twin Bridges
The stories from this old orphanage are
sometimes troubling, so it's no wonder that past employees reported hearing and seeing strange things. The building is now private property, so it's tough to experience it for yourself. But maybe that's a good thing.
If you’re ready to get into the Halloween spirit, try going on one of Montana’s haunted hikes .
