It’s one thing not to be afraid of ghosts, but to actually have the desire to see one is a different story. Montana is actually full of allegedly haunted buildings, so ghost hunters’ odds are pretty good. If you’re feeling brave and like you might be up for a paranormal experience, try one of these 10 places to spot a ghost in Montana.
1. Sacajawea Hotel, Three Forks
Guests at this beautiful old hotel have reported seeing the ghost of a man believed to be John Q Adams, the original builder. A housekeeper has also been seen appearing out of nowhere and walking into a closet that is no longer there. Yikes!
2. Elks Lodge 537, Miles City
The Elks Lodge was THE place to go for drinking and card games during prohibition. There was a reported suicide there in 1936, and the ghost of a woman in a long dress is often spotted in the halls. An apparition has even been caught on camera coming out of a bathroom.
3. Boulder Hot Springs, Boulder
If you stay at Boulder Hot Springs, say hello to Simone. She was a prostitute who was murdered by a mining executive on the property, and many guests and employees have seen her.
4. Chico Hot Springs, Chico
Do ghosts just love hot springs or what? The resident spirit here is Percie Knowles, the original proprietor of the Chico Warm Springs Hotel. Legend has it that some tipsy party-goers broke into the hot springs and shouted so loud while they were swimming that they "woke the dead." They all saw a spirit dressed in white hovering by the pool, and needless to say, they exited quickly.
5. The Daly Mansion, Hamilton
The Daly Mansion is a gorgeous place, and that may be why Mr. and Mrs. Daly seem to have stuck around. His cigar smoke can sometimes be smelled by visitors, and Mrs. Daly's spirit has been seen in the second floor hallway.
6. The Lobby Bar, Great Falls
The Lobby Bar is at the bottom of what was once the Davenport Hotel, and there are dozens of ghosts that apparently still like to hang out upstairs... in fact, this is considered one of the most haunted buildings in Montana. Take a ghost tour and see for yourself.
7. Old Montana Prison Complex, Deer Lodge
The creepy feeling you get when you tour this old prison may not be your imagination. Visitors have experienced random cold spots and the feeling of being choked. Spirits have been seen as well, both during paranormal investigations and during tours in broad daylight.
8. Hotel Meade, Bannack State Park
There have been a number of strange incidents at Bannack State Park, the most reported being the sounds of babies crying when there are no babies in the area. But an apparition of a woman has actually been spotted inside the hotel several times.
9. The Grand Union Hotel, Fort Benton
In the late 1800s, a cowhand drunkenly rode his horse into this hotel and up the main staircase before the bar manager shot and killed him. Since then, phantom hoof-beats have been heard on the staircase, mysterious blue lights dance across Room 202, and a male ghost in a long coat is sometimes spotted in the rooms and in the lobby.
10. The Pollard Hotel, Red Lodge
If you're staying in Room 310 or Room 312 and you see a woman in a yellow dress, don't be alarmed. That's just their resident ghost, and she's harmless.
